Following in the footsteps of Volvo, Volkswagen have announced they willcease making diesel and petrol cars, and that they'll be 100% electric by 2040.
2040 is far later than many people would like but VW's announcement is still a bigwin for everyone campaigning to protect our climate from toxic car emissions.Traditional car manufacturers are under increasing pressure from regulators toreduce carbon-dioxide emissions to combat climate change, prompting Volkswagento make this change to electric vehicles.
VW plans to launch fully or partly electric versions across its line up of more than 300cars, vans, trucks and motorbikes by 2030.
The gradual exit from combustion engines will mark a change for VW who willcontinue to modify its combustion engine technology after the new platform isintroduced next decade. After 2050, there may still be some gasoline and dieselmodels in regions where there is insufficient charging infrastructure, according toMichael Jost, strategy chief for Volkswagen.
Last year Volvo made a similar claim, they will introduce a portfolio of electrified carsacross its model range, embracing fully electric cars, plug in hybrid cars and mildhybrid cars by 2019. They plan to launch five fully electric cars between 2019 and2021, three of which will be Volvo models and two of which will be high performanceelectrified cars from Polestar.
